Exercise/Fitness Tip
Make a few small and simple changes this month and add something new to your routine.  Choose a parking spot farther from the store, take the stairs, not the elevator, mow the lawn, or take a walk to some place new.

Back To School: Make Healthy Eating and Fitness Fun, Tips for you and the kids

It's that time of year again.  Your kids are back in school, so it's back to a busy routine.  I'm sure many of you will spend quite some time each week in the car so you should be prepared.  Always have a healthy snack in the car, not only for you but for those hungry kids too.  Some great snack ideas would be mini carrots, popcorn, apple slices, dry cereal like cheerios, pretzels, raisins, etc.  Don't forget a small travel container of dip for the veggies and of course you don't want to forget the wipes to clean up any mistakes.  Fill your water bottle before you go and keep it with you at all times.
Exercise regularly with your children.  This will be great for everyone.  Do you have in-home workouts on DVD?  If so, include your kids.  Have a dog?  Take your pooch for a walk as a family. Some other fun ideas would be to jump on a trampoline, go bike riding, jump rope or go roller blading.  Those are just a few quick fitness ideas you can incorporate into your family fun time.  For a rainy day, you can get a pretty decent workout with Dance Dance Revolution or Nintendo Wii game system.
As we all know, at times homework can get overwhelming to both the kids and the parents.  So have a bit of fun and surprise your kids with an impromptu fifteen-minute homework break.  You can do any of the activities I mentioned above or shoot some hoops, play chase, do jumping jacks or dance around to some fun music.  Afterwards, have a quick healthy snack, possibly a fruit plate with yogurt or a veggie plate with dip to recharge your self and kids just a bit more.  I can almost guarantee this homework break will make a difference.
Regular physical activity is very good for you and your children. Spend each day doing some form of exercise together.  This will teach your children how important exercise is and by mixing in a variety of fitness activities you'll make this fun for them too.

In The Kitchen

I can only imagine you are on the go a lot during the school year so I thought some quick healthy smoothie ideas would be nice this month.  These are smoothies we have personally made at home.
Healthy Smoothies
1 banana
Frozen whole strawberries (6 or 7)
1 ½ cup Fat Free/Skim Milk
1 small container vanilla yogurt
Small amount of splenda (to taste)
*You can use honey instead of splenda
1 banana
Frozen blueberries (2 cups)
1 ½ cup Fat Free/Skim Milk
1 small container strawberry yogurt
Honey (to taste)
Soy protein powder
*You could use juice instead of milk in these smoothies
A tasty dessert smoothie:
Banana
Chocolate Syrup to taste (Fat Free)
Vanilla Frozen Yogurt (Fat Free)
Peanut Butter to taste (low fat)
This smoothie is delicious!
